A year-long art challenge. One exercise a week for 52 weeks, each with a video, in an order that builds your fundamentals step by step. You stay on one core idea for several weeks, long enough to really understand it and learn how to apply it. By the end you have the mileage, and you know which exercises to go back to for whatever you need to work on.
Yes. The whole thing is free, start to end. There’s also a paid version, Challenge 52 Guided, for people who want extra support.
Week 1 comes out on New Year’s Eve. After that you can start any time and go at your own pace.
Automatically. A new week unlocks for you every week, starting the day you create your account, so you stay at the right pace. It works the same way in the free course and in Challenge 52 Guided.
No. It’s built for beginners, intermediates and advanced artists. If you’re a beginner, this is the place to start: you learn the basics of each fundamental and why it matters. If you’re further along, the exercises push you to see each one in a new way.
Anything you draw with. Paper and pencil or a tablet both work.
Either, or a mix of both. Some weeks use up a lot of paper, pens or paint, so going digital for those saves materials. Other weeks, like drawing from life, are more fun with a sketchbook.
It’s strongly recommended. The challenge teaches the most essential fundamentals first, then moves into more complex ideas. If you jump around, you miss how each exercise connects to the ones before it.
The weeks keep unlocking every week, so it’s up to you to keep up with the pace. If you miss one, it stays open and you can pick up where you left off. Most people burn out when they push too fast, so balance the challenge with your personal work and take breaks when you need them.
That’s up to you. Nobody counts your drawings or grades them, and your studies aren’t meant to be perfect. Don’t rush them either: take enough time on each one to learn something from it. The more work you put in, the more you improve.
No. You can follow along without posting anything. If you want feedback, share it in the Discord. You can also post it with #challenge52.
